In 2006, Seven months after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, I joined Habitat for Humanity for a week to help rebuild the community and get people sheltered in permanent homes. Habitat trusted my building knowledge, that I became a project and team leader. The experience of working with the community, my team, along with the satisfaction it brought, inspired me to return to NOLA and the Gulf Coast twice more.
Katrina destroyed more than New Orleans, we built in New Orleans' Musician's Village, the town of Slidell, and the town of Picayune, Mississippi. The spirit of the people, having experienced death, disaster, and destruction of their world was such an inspiration and taught me lifelong lessons. The friends I made so long ago are still friends I'm lucky to have now. Ask me more about my experiences!
